We're on Pinterest!

Follow Me on Pinterest

I love Pinterest for how visual it is. That makes it perfect to put together lists of similar titles. So far I've put together boards for the 2012 Rhode Island Teen Book Award nominees, Strong Female Characters, Dystopias, Urban Fiction, and some other miscellaneous stuff I found over the site. I'll be adding to it regularly.

Click either the big P above, or the Pinterest button to the right.

Have a book you love? Don't forget that you can submit a review through this website

Next Anime Club meeting is December 20th

I hope everyone that came to the first Teen Anime Club meeting had a great time! For those that couldn't make it, we watched 3 different shows: Bleach, Azumanga Diaoh, and Soul Eater. They are three very different shows, but all three were a lot of fun to watch. A lot of anime programs were first a manga series. Here at the library we own quite a number of volumes of Bleach.

The series follows Ichigo Kurosaki after he obtains the powers of a Soul Reaper (or, as it's called in Japanese, a Shinigami). He is basically like what we would call the Grim Reaper. His new powers allow him to protect humans from evil spirits as well as guiding souls into the after life. It's a pretty action-packed series.

Bleach is still ongoing and has 51 volumes in English so far! Here at the library you'll find them shelved with the other manga under the letter "K".

I've gone survey crazy!

I've made some changes to this site with the hopes that it will become more collaborative. You may notice a new tab up at the top called "Submit a Review." That's right, I want YOU to tell me and other readers what you think about books, movies/tv, and games. Tell us about the ones you loved and the ones you hate (or love to hate). Your review will be published here and I'll link to it on our Facebook page as well. Do you have other suggestions for either this website, Facebook page, or the actual Teen Zone itself? Click the button to the right that invites you to fill out a survey about what we could do better or differently. Every opinion is valid and I promise to listen to whatever you suggest. And finally, I put up a poll. Right now it asks about what your favorite Thanksgiving dish is. Once we pass Thanksgiving and work our way into December (and creep up to Christmas Vacation!) I'll swap it out with a different question. Want to see a certain question appear as one of the polls? Then fill out the survey I mentioned above! The Library will be closed Thursday November 22 and Friday November 23. Be sure to come in before then to check out books and videos to get you through Thanksgiving!

Steampunk recommendation

If you come by the library today you'll see me dressed up for Halloween. Wondering what I'm dressed up as? It's Victorian Steampunk!

Steampunk is a sub-genre of Science Fiction. It's usually set in an alternate 19th century and features a lot of steam-powered machines and mechanics. It's a lot of out-of-time and place technology.

Fashion, art, and literature can all have elements of steampunk in them (like my outfit above!). One of my favorite teen steampunk series is Leviathan by Scott Westerfeld.

Leviathan is set in an alternate World War I era (so that means around 1912-1914). The Germans are using mechanized weapons while Great Britain has fabricated creatures genetically. The two sides greatly oppose the other. The heroes of the series are Aleksander, son of Archduke Ferdinand, and Deryn, a Scottish girl who poses as a boy so that she can join the British Air Service.

I don't want to give too much of the plot away- but it is an exciting and fun read. Be warned, it ends in a cliffhanger so you'll probably want to pick up Behemoth too. The series ends with Goliath.

Looking for a good scary read?

Halloween is tomorrow which means it's the perfect time to read a scary novel. I've put together a list of 5 great titles that you can check out. Click on the title and it will take you to it's page in the catalog so you can see if it's in or to request it. Looking for more suggestions? Come on in to the library and I can show you a list of some spooky titles perfect for this time of year.
